The World's Largest Protest Sign

When choosing a place to have a political convention, it's always wise to find a demographic that supports your views. So when Democratic National Committee chose Denver, Colorado I had to shake my head in wonder. I knew that Denver was the home of some of the most dedicated Pro-Life protesters in the West! They even protest the homes of construction contractors that build abortion facilities. What were the Pro-Abortion Democrats thinking?

Didn't Democrats know that the Pro-Life group American Right To Life Action was based in Denver, along with other strong Pro-Life groups? And did the Democrats understand that their unabashed support of abortion would trigger large protests by the life loving activists? After all, the "right to choose" has been a Democrat Party plank for many years. They are very proud of their many votes to support abortion among Democrat politicians.

Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama has received a 100 % rating from the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights League (NARAL) for all the years he has been in the United States Senate (2005-2007.) In a July 2008 speech Obama said: "There will always be people, many of goodwill, who do not share my view on the issue of choice. On this fundamental issue, I will not yield and Planned Parenthood will not yield."

Furthermore, at a recent forum held at Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren asked Barack Obama to define at what point a baby gains human rights. Obama answered: "That question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade." Obama's strange reply quickly spread across the wires and databanks of the internet. The offhand remark was uninformative and typical of a Pro-Abortion politician trying to play down radical views.

It seems plain enough that Barack Obama supports abortion. But let's look even further back in Barack Obama's political history. Before he was a US Senator, he was an Illinois State Senator who voted against the Born Alive Act more than once. Obama's notorious dedication to stopping that bill kept it from passing so that aborted babies who were accidentally born could not be kept alive. When he left the State Senate to become a US Senator, the bill passed, some saying only because Barack Obama wasn't there to stop it.

It was in this atmosphere that American RTL Action found itself faced with a daunting task: to protest Democratic National Committee members and delegates in earth-shaking ways yet do so in such a manner as to avoid being mischaracterized by the liberal news media which permeates the mainstream press of today's society. Reporters and editors of mainstream news organizations mostly support abortion and slant the news however they can to promote abortion and portray protesters as radicals.

A new and unusual organization, American RTL Action is a no-compromise Pro-Life group with a 12-year mandate to stop abortion. Should they fail by the end of that time, the leadership has pledged to resign and let new leaders bring fresh ideas to the table. They feel that even if a law makes small gains against abortion, it should not be supported unless it's totally against abortion. They are committed to protesting any and all facets of abortion.

Though many actions were planned and carried out in Denver this week (including rallies, marches, speeches and video interviews posted on the web) there was one protest action that stood out in a giant way. It was a sign so large it broke the world's record for being the largest protest sign ever! The sign ended up being 530 feet tall and 666 feet wide. It weighed 2,700 pounds sewn together with four miles of stitching bringing 2,400 twin sheets together to form the letters. 44 sign carriers backpacked the sign onto Table Mountain and deployed it to where it was clearly visible to many people. The sign proclaimed:

  Destroys
 uNborn
  Children

The gigantic sign generated a huge response to local news stations and much talk around internet forums. It's few words and plain meaning contributed to less confusion about the issue. Also it's clever lettering and surprise appearance caused quite a stir. And that's what clever signage is all about. If people talking about the sign itself get others to notice the message, it's well worth it.

There were a few problems with this sign action, however. For one thing, the American RTL Action did not get permission to post the sign. AmericanProtest.net recommends protesters always have permission (when it is required) for any sign or protest. In this case it was required, or at least several minor laws were broken. One sign-hating liberal man did try to take the sign down by himself, but was stopped by police.

On the other hand, the Pro-Life group made a special point to keep the mountainside free of litter, and in fact, declared they would leave the area cleaner than they found it. They quickly took the gigantic sign down in an orderly manner when requested by police to do. Their point had been made and the volunteers were all very happy that the event had turned out so well.

Although it's certainly very fashionable, it's not necessary to have the World's Largest Protest Sign in order to protest abortion. An effective means is right here at your computer. It's a link to your House Representative and Senator's websites where an email can be sent! It's easy to send one and guess what? Now is the time when many politicians are trying to get a vote. Therefore they will listen more.

Let's all take the time to write a cogent letter to our Congress and Senate asking them to ban abortion and stand up for the unborn. Every little bit counts and your political contribution matters. The World's Largest Protest Sign is an inspiration to do great things and save lives. What will we do to rise to that challenge? I say it's time to stand up for the innocent, and America!
